Grading

Grading takes place two to three times a year, usually once a term. It is a chance to demonstrate, both to Master Ang and yourself, all that you have learnt in training up to that stage. Grading is also the only way to advance in belt rank and thus be allowed to learn more advanced techniques.

The grading syllabus is split into a variety of sections:

  • Punching / Kicking Techniques
  • Forms – a sequence of movements based on fighting techniques
  • Form Applications – a sequence demonstrating the practical application of the forms

Higher belts will also be expected to demonstrate more advanced techniques:

  • One-Step Sparring – a series of self-defence techniques
  • Sparring – non-contact sparring practice to demonstrate you technique and ability
  • Board Breaking – this demonstrates both power and technique

When attending a grading session then are a few things you need to remember:

Full Uniform – To take part in grading you will be required to wear the full kit; jacket, trousers and belt. If you dont have the jacket you may also wear the Hung Kuen T-shirt, but the jacket is preferable. Those without uniform may not be permitted to grade.

Grading Form – This should be filled out and handing in to Master Ang the morning of the grading.

Grading Card – The grading card should be handed in, along with the grading form, at the beginning of the session. The card will be returned during one of the sunday sessions after the grading.

Etiquette – Grading takes place in order of belts from lowest to highest; so white belts grade first, followed by 1st yellow, then 2nd yellow, etc. Whilst you are not grading it is important to show respect to those who are currently grading. Remain seated and quiet at the back of the hall; should you wish to practice you can do so quietly in the hallway.

In order to grade you must first be registered as a member of the “Hung Kuen School of Shaolin Kungfu” with Master Ang. This is a separate membership to the Loughborough AU and is not required in order to participate in regular training. However if you wish to take part in grading or competitions you will need to buy membership. Membership to the “Hung Kuen School of Shaolin Kung Fu” costs £35 for the entire year.
