The Club

Our club is a student-owned, student-run group whose mission is principally concerned with providing members with excellent instruction in martial arts.  The club, which was established in 1994, trains under Master Ang who, holding a 10th degree black belt, is one of the UK’s most highly qualified martial arts instructors.  Master Ang resides in Oldham, and travels to Loughborough to teach us every Sunday, while our midweek sessions are taught by the club’s own black belt members, who themselves have several years of experience as students and teachers of martial arts.

Committee
Aside from the instructors, the club is organised and run by an elected committee drawn from among the membership.  Committee members hold their posts for one year and take on specific duties, such as managing club equipment or handling publicity.  All committee members are expected to train regularly and set a good example to others in the club, and also give support and advice to new members if necessary.  Anyone can run for a committee post, and all members are encouraged to do so if they want to get more involved with the club. To find out about the current committee and instructors, take a look at our Committee Profiles page.

Socials
The club’s social activities take place regularly and cater for all different tastes.  Nights out on the town, or at Loughborough’s Student Union, are held regularly, as are meals out, such as Sunday lunch or curry nights.  Other regular or recent memorable socials include the ever-popular ‘cook out’, going to watch the Shaolin Monks stage show, the ‘Go Ape!’ adventure course, visiting the annual SENI martial arts expo in London, and trips to Jongleurs comedy club in Leicester.  The club committee has three social secretaries, who plan and organise these regular events, meaning the club can provide much more than just martial arts training.

Affiliations
The club is affiliated to Loughborough’s Athletic Union (AU), who hold and monitor the club’s finances and manage the club’s training schedule and facilities access.  The club is well-represented within the AU through contributing articles to the AU’s magazine, Lufbra WOW, and through participating in AU ceremonies and functions, such as the annual awards night, the AGM, and so on.  All members of the club should be aware of and respect the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the AU.  The club is also affiliated to Master Ang’s Hung Kuen School, which hosts all of the club’s competitions.  The other Hung Kuen clubs based in the UK travel to compete in these national championship events, and the club has long enjoyed good relations with other students of Hung Kuen.  Joint social events with these other clubs are currently being planned for the near future.  For more information on either the AU or Hung Kuen UK, please use the links at the top of the page on the right.

Community Involvement
In addition to participating in the AU, the club takes an active role in student life by running free self defence courses for all students at certain points in the year.  Run on a one-off basis, these courses have in the past had excellent attendance and been very well received by those who took part.  The club fully expects to host further events of this kind in the coming years, and the club’s members take great pride in their voluntary involvement in providing this important service to the student community.
