   Starring in: News, Socials — Ania @ 11:47 hrs Ania

Hello everybody!

I hope you’re all feeling as excited as I am about our upcoming social to Jongleurs in Leicester this Thursday!!!

Remember… this is a celebration of Doug’s birthday and I’m aware of a few other birthdays within our club also so the more that come the merrier! It’s always a really good night and after the acts they clear tables away to the side and it becomes a very surreal sort of disco, always a laugh!!

A reminder of the details:

Your £20 gets you your ticket to see three hilarious comedy acts, a meal, a drink as well as coach travel to and from the venue.

We will be arriving at Jongleurs for 7pm and picked up at 1am.

Please meet at the union by the steam engine (outside the hairdresser and taxi company) at 6.15 pm.

Give your money and food order to Ania, Becca or Henry by Mondays training session at the latest.

The menu can be viewed via this link:

http://www.jongleurs.com/clubs/menuPDFs/JongleursFoodMenu_web.pdf

With regards to drink orders you can choose on the night but they are restricted to Stella or Smirnoff Ice, if you want to drink alcohol (they have a somewhat larger range for your subsequent drinks dont worry), or if you don’t want alcohol then you can have a J20 or a coke!

See you in training!

With love,

Ania, Becca and Henry

Annual Committee Elections

   Starring in: News — Mr Chan @ 13:05 hrs Mr Chan

As indicated in Ben’s email, the committee elections are coming up, with a preliminary date for the meeting set at 27th Feb in the EHB, after training that evening. This gives any of you who want to be more involved the chance to take on a responsibility and enjoy a little extra-curricular experience next year.

As well as performing the specific duty associated with their posts, committee members form the core of the club in terms of attendance at training and social events, and by being a point of reference for newer members on things like attitudes to training, learning etiquette, and generally helping people to integrate into the group.

If you think you have the necessary skills and can make the commitment to any of the posts on offer, then we all advise you to give it a go - it’s a rewarding challenge, a great opportunity to get a different experience out of the club, and after all, if for nothing else, it does look good on your CV!

The term for the new committee starts after the Easter holidays and runs for 12 months, so if you apply you will be starting this April. The positions on offer are:

  • Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Publicity Secretary
  • Social Secretary (x3)
  • Kit Secretary (x3)

The current committee members (listed on this site) will all be happy to explain their roles and duties to anyone interested, so find them in training or drop them a message via facebook, etc, if you have any questions.

Application forms need to be filled in and handed to Ben by 24th Feb, and they can be obtained by emailing him at mmbjg@lboro.ac.uk. Each applicant needs a proposer and a second proposer - the proposer will be expected to speak on behalf of the applicant at the elections meeting so bear that in mind when asking someone to propose you.

Finally, good luck to anyone applying for a position.

Next Grading - 9th March

   Starring in: News — Mr Chan @ 12:44 hrs Mr Chan

The next grading session has been scheduled for Sunday 9th March in the EHB, as usual. If you’re grading then make sure of the following:

  • You turn up regularly to practice between then and now;
  • You’ve thoroughly learned your grading material;
  • You collect and fill out a grading form;
  • You arrive early on the day, in proper kit and belt, with your chequebook, membership card, and completed grading form.

Obviously on the day there’s the same protocol as before, regarding scheduling, courtesy and such. If anyone has any questions, or if it’s your first grading session, don’t hesitate to ask the seniors or committee members for advice.

Good luck to everyone grading!

Grading - Sunday 2nd December

   Starring in: News — Mr Chan @ 23:26 hrs Mr Chan

Just a few pointers for everyone ahead of the grading session coming up, as obviously a lot of you are new to all of this!

1) The session will be held in the EHB and will start promptly at 10am. Make sure you turn up early so we’re ready to go at 10 - please get there by 9.45 at the latest.

2) Bring your cheque book! You will need to join/renew your annual Hung Kuen membership (this is different to the AU club membership) and also pay for the grading. If you have a grading card, bring that as well. If not, bring two passport photos, and then fill out a registration form which will be given to you on the day - without joining Hung Kuen you will not be able to grade or compete. You will also need to bring the grading form given to you by Naomi in training. If you don’t have one she will have spares on her on the day.

3) If you’ve purchased kit, bring it all with you (tunics preferable to t-shirts). And also make sure it’s clean and not creased up!

4) When you’re called up on the day, stay relaxed and remember what you’ve been taught. You won’t be doing anything you haven’t already done over and over again in training. Stay focussed on that and don’t worry about being watched - after all, before long you’ll be showing off to all your mates at Christmas anyway (if you’re anything like me).

5) It is very important to observe etiquette during the grading session. This includes bowing to Master Ang when you go up to register and before and after you perform, remaining quiet while others perform, and so on. The seniors will go through the exact etiquette with you before the session starts, but just remember - be respectful at all times.

6) Since the session can go on for a while, you may want to bring something to eat and drink. Everyone needs to be there at the end to collect their new belts, but it is fine to take off and come back if you need to. This does mean you’ll miss watching the seniors grading though, and since a few are going for their black belts this time, you might want to stick around and watch the show!

Finally, if all goes according to plan, we’ll be having the cook off at Doug and Graham’s house in the evening. You’ll get (another) email clarifying this at some point during the week - the basic idea is to cook a dish and bring it along to share with everyone.

Hope this info helps. If anyone has any questions at all then don’t hesitate to ask one of the seniors. Good luck!
